I am still relatively new to the world of scouting and what all comes along with being a parent of a Webelo. I recently learned what "swaps" were and how important they are to the Twilight camper so we thought that we would share our week of swap experience to both educate and entertain.
We started Monday with a blank slate and a bag of fishing lures attached to safety pins ready to be swapped with other campers. All campers bring these swaps and no offer to swap can be denied as a rule so as you can imagine-by the end of the week-a camper has a huge assortment of swaps. These are traditionally fastened to the campers hat for all to see and evidently-the more swaps the better. Some campers made small crafts, some used trading cards or small toys from Oriental Trading. Lots went our route and used to nasty and slimy worms, crawfish, and frogs commonly used as fishing lures. Some "thoughtful" parent helped their camper make tiny bags of green slime that the kids wore around on their hats all week in the blazing sun. By the end of the week-William had something that had transformed from green slime into some kind of nasty science experiment-I do not recommend the green slime swap!
All in all-I think that it was a great week and that we are well armed with great ideas the next time a swapping opportunity presents itself. He made a catapault, birdhouse, learned map skills, shot BB guns, the classic Steve Martin "arrow through the head" trick and tons more. What a fun week for a 9 year old boy!
