CANStruction!!!

Our Uncle Chris and his fellow architects recently participated in an AMAZING community service project with even more amazing results. We are so excited about it that we wanted to share it with our Blogger friends. Here is the description of the event as told by Uncle Chris:

"HKS competes in a competition called “CANstruction” every year – it’s a competition to benefit the North Texas Food Bank. Design firms compete to build structures by stacking canned goods… our entry this year was a tractor themed “Planting Seeds to End Hunger”.

This was my first year to help – it was actually a lot of fun.

You can see the finished product and a few “during” shots to see a little about what went into stacking all the cans. What you don’t see are the late nights we spent the week before the competition figuring out exactly how to build this thing…. estimating can counts… ordering and picking up cans from Wal-Mart and Albertsons… raising money to pay for the cans… etc.

Notice the green “earth” on one side – this side hasn’t been planted yet… the brown on the other side was arranged in neat rows (even had seed packets sticking out) as though it had already been plowed and planted. Heck, there’s even a smokestack with the lid up, headlights, and a clutch and gas pedal. J

Anyhow, I guess we pulled it off pretty well because we won the FIRST PLACE “Jurors Favorite” award. There were 31 entries this year, making Dallas CANstruction the second largest in the nation, behind New York .

We’re already thinking about next year – we want to take first place again!"

Way to go Uncle Chris! The McKinney Smith family is proud of you!!!
